The Pixel building is the first office building with none carbon dioxide emissions and is able to generate its own energy and water.
This construction covers over 840 sq metres and was developed in 2010 by architects from the Studio505 team. It ranked first in the certificate conceded by the Green Building Council in Australia. There was no other building which had gotten such high score in the Australian Green Star so far. Moreover, the construction won the American certification LEED and the British Breeman, achieving the highest possible classification. It became the first building ever to achieve the three certifications with the highest score in each of them.
Let´s analyse what the Pixel building does and why it achieved such certifications.
The most eye-catching feature to those who come across the building Pixel is its colourful façade with translucent recycled panels which cover the building structure and allows the passage of the sunlight.
The architectonic thin layer works as a ventilated façade over the glass panels, installed in the cement structure of the building. These double layer glass panels work as thermal isolation without obstructing the passage of the sun light and is able to keep the heat in its internal chamber which is dissipated through the walls.
Illumination and natural ventilation are two pivotal requisites to minimize the building energetic requirements so that the façade adapts to the building needs at all times which enhances its efficiency. The Pixel façade includes smart window technology which allows to open the windows automatically during cold nights to allow cool air refresh the structure.
Let´s see what makes the Pixel building and its interior so special.
Energy of the building is partly supplied by the wind turbines of a vertical axis as well as solar panels installed on the rooftop which come from renewable energies.
Another important feature is its system to collect rainwater for its consequent use. On the rooftop, it can be also found a vegetation cover in which rainwater filtering and collection were installed to ease its use in the toilets and refrigeration systems in the whole building. The drinking water installation is indeed connected to the local drinking water system.
The Pixel building has a specific design which can neutralize carbon emissions, with odourless vacuum operated for WC, fix blinds with shadow devices and car parks for the exact number of vehicles.
As you may have noticed, apart from the avant-garde design, this is another energetic efficient wonder which makes us believe in environmentally-friendly installations which comply with the sustainability standards for buildings.
