The fact that makes them different is the way low temperature radiators extend heat along the room.
Low temperature radiators usually have a copper battery which heats up the air which flows around them. It also releases hot air through the grills situated on top of these machines. In the case of conventional radiators, 80% of heat transfer occurs by convection and 20% by radiation. Low temperature radiators though, 100% of heat emission comes about by convection.
This translates into once the radiator starts to heat up, the surrounding air becomes warmer and the density of air diminishes so room air becomes lighter. Since the room air is lighter, it naturally tends to go up whereas cold air goes down filling the room left by the warm air. This process is constant and cyclical while both radiators are on.
Advantages of low temperature radiators
1. Less consumption and more comfort: because of it low thermal inertia, they can adapt quicker and more precisely to air temperature changes.
2. Environmentally friendly: all the materials used to build these radiators are 100% recyclable
3. Cheap and easy installation: they are recommendable to both new works and existing premise since they are an affordable product.
4. Safe: these radiators are never too hot when touched.
There are nonetheless trade-offs. It has to be taken into consideration the fact that they work at a lower temperature, so they need a higher area for the temperature exchange to provide the same heat as a conventional radiator.
This means that these radiators should be bigger and its installation would not be always possible due to their size.
In order to overcome the size issue, many manufactures have incorporated a fan inside which eases convection and achieves a higher thermal power. Depending on where the radiator is going to be installed, the fan remains a highly important factor to be considered.
Energetic efficiency is something which always should be born in mind regarding this type of installations. Using low temperature radiators is positively valued as it works at a lower temperature, leaks are lower and efficiency of thermal generators is higher hence energy consumption is lower.
