A great example of Arce Clima’s multi discipline capabilities in action – Arce Clima provided services including mechanical, electrical, communications and security at this shop centre refurbishment in Copenhague.

One of the key features of the installation was the use of BIM technologies to carry out this project. It was not only useful to create simulations during Engineering design but also coordinate all the information regarding the project.

A challenging project

Our Engineering team faced a complicated project due to the current update of Danish regulations regarding duct and piping isolation. The amount of isolation for this project increased even more the complexity of the project.

The latest projects done in Denmark were following DS452.3 legislation. This regulation sets six types of different pipes and ducts to be used. Theses categories are categorized depending on the installation, material placement and environmental conditions regarding humidity and the weather. Setting the type of category includes the kind of isolation that must be used at the installation.

One of the toughest parts of the project has been the smoke extraction installation. This procedure allows for a correct smoke extraction and combustion gases in the infrastructures that need to be done. It leverages performance of people’s escape routes allowing for a better access to intervening equipment as well as limiting fire propagation.

The installation complies with all the indicated requisites in order to comply with Danish regulations so our HVAC division focused on dimensioning and calculation, connection with extraction spots and cross of ducts with the rest of installations.

Applying BIM Technologies in Copenhague

Arce Clima use BIM technologies on a regular basis in our installations. This time, we went beyond engineering design phases. As a global methodology, implementing BIM gives the possibility to go one step forward in 3D design since it incorporates several key points that need to be considered:

Time (4D): time is included as a project’s design dimension as a crucial point in order for the installation to be executed on time.

Costs (5D): considering financial aspects related to the rest of dimensions increase project efficiency and reduce operational costs.

Atmosphere (6D): Denmark is one of the countries with the highest promotion of energy efficiency and sustainability. That’s why, environmental dimension becomes much more important.

Maintenance (7D): management of maintenance services includes business administration tasks which complement the whole process.

For the development of BIM technologies, we have had daily meetings with onsite managers to breakdown the most important aspects which has become fundamental not only in the Scandinavian countries but also across the European continent.

Successful outcomes

Collecting and integrating all the necessary information for design, execution and maintenance of the project has not been an easy task. However, use of BIM enhanced performance of the installation and was completed without unscheduled outages. The project was delivered on time and within budget.
