We carry on searching for the most original and inspiring buildings which reflect our concern for natural resources. The relationship between sustainable architecture and design is an example of this.
We travel to Singapore where one can find one of the world´s most emblematic libraries, Bishan Public Library. A sustainable redesign of the interior resulting in a highly restricted urban space.
The library was designed and projected by LOOK Architects. Total area of 4000 squared meters divided into different learning rooms which are distributed onto various floors, including an internal atrium which allows natural daylight to enter through different rooms.
The origin of this library is a special feature as it was created using the tree house concept in order for the different stages to reflect different learning levels. Thus, the whole building focused on the idea of learning and lets each visitor be part of it.
What are the strengths of Bishan Public Library?
Energy savings
It was one of the most important points which was considered when project was tackled. In order to overcome energy cost problems, many kinds of stained glasses and large windows were used to play with different types of colors to create a unique atmosphere in each room. Moreover, design focused on a central patio which maximizes the use of day-lighting.
Management and integration of space
Management of space was one of the key features of this project. Management of space as a whole responds to a concrete concept: management of each room has got to maximize the resource optimization as well as the materials. For example, the basement was designed with more space and isolation towards noise as it is the kids area,
This building is highly relevant from the design point of view as it manages the sun light in a way that beautifies the façade. Also, it helps foster energy savings without losing privacy between rooms.
Orientation
Location of this library was one of the most time-consuming elements as the search of the highest sunlight use was the most important. The building has numerous windows, skylights and showcases of many colors which help modify the day light creating different atmospheres throughout the day.
Material used
Bishan library is located in a highly restricted urban environment. Thus, in order to minimize the effects during its construction, special requirements were adopted: a concrete structure with four slabs found in the basement which gives access to communal stairs and lifts looking for bigger floor areas.
The façade
This building was designed with the objective of catching the visitor´s eye, giving access to the central area via a massive ramp which is also used as an efficient evacuation mean in case of emergency. In addition, there are many types of stained glasses, windows and lattices which allow sunlight through so the building is a lot more visible.
