Why is november 25 the day against gender-based violence?
The commemoration of this day, as the Day against gender-based violence, dates back to 1981, time when the women rights activists were rising up against gender-based violence.
In this regard, the United Nations got the approval from the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. With this convention, the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women , issued by the United Nations some years later, in 1993, stated violence against women as:
Every act of violence that has or may have as a result a physical, sexual, psychologic harm or suffering for a woman, as well as the threat of such actions, the coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, both privately and publicly.
Conversely, in such Assembly it was found necessary the elimination of every form of violence against women in every form and way, in addition to the commitment of Member States and of the international community to eliminate violence against women.
However, in December 1999, the UN General Assembly designates November 25 as the International Day of the Elimination of Violence against Women, asking government, ONGs and international organizations to promote public awareness campaigns for one of the greatest scourges in society.
Which is the handled data regarding violence against women?
According to Amnesty International, violence against women is the more extensive consequence of gender discrimination and, according to the WHO (World Health Organization), the 35% of the female population has suffered physical or sexual violence at least once in her life from an intimate partner, or sexual violence from another man, without being in a relationship.
The facts and the digits the UN handles are completely enlightening of the current situation of women in the world.
- Nearly 750 million women and girls living today were married before their 18th birthday.
- Over 200 million women and girls living today have been subjected to female genital mutilation.
- The 71% of the trafficking victims all over the world are women and girls; and 3 out of 4 are used for sexual exploitation.
- Violence against women is a cause of death and the inability between women in a reproductive age as cancer, and it is a greater cause of ill health than traffic accidents and malaria combined.
The “black against violence” campaign
In Galicia, since 2015, an awareness campaign against gender-based violence has been carried out, as set out in the UN guidelines, thanks to a collective initiative of social awareness which started in Santiago de Compostela, known as En negro contra as violencias.
However, with the impulse of the Local Administration since the start and support of more town halls, institutions and sectors over the years, this initiative has had a remarkable growth until it has become a campaign that reaches every corner of the autonomous community of Galicia.
In this way, the great implication in the territory to this rejection by the economic, associative, educational, sports, social and cultural fabric, as well as by all citizens, has been seen as a great collective response for the elimination of gender violence and the murders of women at the hands of their sexual partners.
To join the campaigns, whether as a town hall, as a company or group, you only have to complete a form in the webpage of “Black against violence”. In Arce Clima we have already done it and we clearly show that we also go black against gender-based violence, specially on the 25th of November. But, above all, every day of the year.
